Renmore A.F.C. Soccer Club was
formed following a Community Games meeting in 1973 by Mike
Darcy, the current Honorary Club President, Bernard
Shapiro, and Tony Dilleen (Tony chaired the first
ever Committee meeting of the club). Other founding members were Bernard’s two sons
Patrick and Bernard Jnr., Tom Murphy, John Coll, brothers
Damien and Paul Meaney, and Paul Gaughan.
The following season, mainly through the efforts of
Mr. Shapiro and Joe Keating the club had three teams competing
in the local Galway F.A. Juvenile leagues as well as a Junior
team.
Needless to say, it took a couple of seasons before
the club registered its first success – an Under 11 title in
Terryland Park in 1975.
However, the highlight of those early years must
surely be the Whit Weekend in the 1978/79 season when the club
won three trophies in four days.
On the Friday of that weekend the Junior side won
the Schweppe’s Cup, on the Saturday the U-17 side
collected the Richard Quinn trophy, and on Whit Monday the
U-15 side traveled to Sligo and brought home the Joe Wickham
Connacht Cup to Renmore Avenue.
These victories marked the first big breakthrough
since the clubs formation in 1973, and it represented a
notable personal triumph for “Mr. Soccer Renmore”, Bernard
Shapiro, who since the beginning, had often ploughed a lonely
furrow of dedication and perseverance.
These successes were all the more significant when
viewed in the context of club policy which drew its players
solely from Renmore, unlike many other clubs at the
time.
For the record, the goal scorers of that weekend,
who will be forever etched in local folklore, were as follows:
Paul Greaney, who snatched the only score in the Junior’s
Schweppes Cup victory over Salthill Devon; Tommy Walsh’s extra
time winner against Corrib Shamrocks in the U-17 decider after
Mike Hasset had earlier headed home during normal time; and
Jimmy Nolan who scored the winner in Sligo in the Joe Wickham
U-15 Cup final, the first Renmore side to win a Connacht Cup
title. |

The mid eighties saw the Junior side achieve
further success with victory in both the Duignan and Quincintenial
Cups, as well as two Reserve league titles.
At Juvenile level, the U-15 side, managed by Dermot
Coll and captained by Mark Herrick, were victorious in the
Wickham Connacht Cup final, defeating Castlebar Celtic on a 3
– 2 scoreline in
Renmore. |

In 1991, Renmore captured the Reserve league trophy
again, defeating local rivals Hibernians in the
decider.
The 1994 season saw the Junior side, managed by
Justin Neary, achieve noteable success in the F.A.I. Junior
Cup area final. This side progressed to the semi-final of this
prestigious competition only to be defeated by eventual
winners Clonmel Town. This was a great achievement for the
club by any standards.
In 1996, Renmore A.F.C. won the Premier League
title for the first time in the clubs history – a great occasion for
manager Neary and the club.
That same year, Renmore represented Galway and
Ireland at a Junior International soccer tournament in Tamasi,
Hungary and were victorious in the decider, having defeated
the home side, Hungary.
In 1997, further success followed when the Junior
side captured the Connacht Senior Cup, defeating Senior League
side Salthill Devon in a replay in Terryland Park. The side
was managed by Dermot Coll. This was a
great achievement for a Junior club.
Two weeks later the same side was victorious in the
Michael Byrne Cup final in Mc Sharry Park, Sligo, defeating
Calry Bohs of Sligo.
At juvenile level, the U-14 side captured the
league and cup double while the U-13 side was narrowly beaten
in their league final. It was another
good year for the club!
In the 1997/1998 season, Renmore also became
Division 2C League winners and the Division 2C Cup
Finalists.
In 1998, the Premier League trophy was won for the
second time in three years, the side managed again by Dermot
Coll. |

U15s lose opener in Qatar but
Rory Gartlan gets full
game |
|
Sunday,
07 January 2007 - The Republic of
Ireland U15 team lost the first match of their
three-game trip to Qatar
against the Aspire Academy
when they were beaten 2-0 by their
hosts.
Two first-half goals by the hosts undid the
Irish team who put up a brave second-half
performance without getting any reward for their
efforts.
The Irish
squad spent most of Saturday travelling from
Dublin and that owed much to their
sluggish start to the game.
Despite
trailing at half-time, Ireland improved in the
second half and had chances to cut the deficit.
Robert Brady came closest to finding the
net for Ireland when he rounded the goalkeeper
only to see his shot cleared off the line by a
defender.
Ireland manager Vincent Butler
admitted afterwards that his team are capable of playing
better:
“The fatigue from the trip
certainly played a part in our slow start to the
match. Aspire scored two well-worked goals early
in the game and we had a lot to do after that.”
“I was pleased with how the players
improved in the second half. I know that they can
play better in our next two games. Our next match
is on Tuesday and a couple of days rest will help
the players.”
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND U15s:

| Aspire Academy 0 - 1
Republic of Ireland |
|
Tuesday, 09 January 2007 -
Ireland came agonisingly close to opening
the scoring in the first-half when denied by the
woodwork on three occasions but Phillpott found
the range in the 36th minute.
The Kilreen
Celtic winger broke the deadlock when he dribbled
past Aspire's right-back before drilling a shot
low past the goalkeeper. The 'keeper managed
to get a hand to the ball but the sheer power of
Phillpott's shot took it beyond his reach.
Vincent Butler's Ireland team lost 2-0 to
Aspire's Under-16 team on Sunday having only
arrived late the night before following a day's
travelling from Dublin. The manager made seven
changes for today's fixture from Sunday's starting
team and the new-look team began the match
brightly.
Robert Brady, Eoin Wearan and
Paul Whyte all saw their shots rebound back off
the post in the first-half as the pace of
Ireland's passing began to stretch the host's
defence.
Once Phillpott provided the goal,
Ireland played with an even larger degree of
comfort and in the end, the score-line could have
more convincing.
Ireland manager Vincent
Butler said afterwards: "We totally controlled the
match and did enough to win by more goals. I was
pleased with how the squad responded to the defeat
on Sunday and we head into our final match against
Aspire on Thursday with one victory each."
"The Aspire team today were not as strong as
the side we played against on Sunday but I'm sure
they will put out a full-strength team on
Thursday. It should be an interesting game - our
lads have recovered from the tiredness of the
journey and they will be fully fit for the final
match."

Aspire Academy Under 16 2-3
Republic of Ireland Under 15 |
|
Thursday, 11 January 2007 -
Conor Murphy scored a goal in each half
for Vincent Butler's side and Robert Brady netted
the third for the Irish with ten minutes remaining
to make it 3-1. Aspire pulled a goal back late in
the match but Ireland held out to win the game and
take the series outright.
Ireland began
strongly and took a deserved lead on 20 minutes
when Murphy latched onto a through ball from
Robert Brady and blasted a low shot past the
goalkeeper into the net. Aspire equalised
approaching the half-time when they seized upon a
goalkeeping error and converted from close-range.
Butler’s team continued to create chances
when the game resumed in the second half and
regained their lead through another striker from
Murphy. The St. Kevin’s Boys combination was again
in evidence when Brady fed Murphy with a pass and
the striker kept his cool to drill the ball home.
Ireland made it 3-1 with ten minutes remaining
when a move that began with Danny Joyce winning a
header on the half-way line ended when Robert
Brady volleying into the net a cross from the left
wing by substitute, Ethan Mannion.
The
hosts punished the Irish for switching off
immediately after extending their lead by scoring
straight away to set up a tense finale.
Ireland manager Vincent Butler felt his
side were dominant in the game and got a deserved
victory. “We always had control of the game
and the quality of our passing was excellent. At
times, we got caught out with a lack of
concentration but overall, the players were
magnificent today and proved to be worthy
winners.”
“This trip to Qatar has been a
worthwhile exercise,” he continued. “We lost the
first game 2-0 which I would put purely down to
fatigue, considering we were travelling for 17
hours on the previous day. The team played better
in the 1-0 win over Aspire on Tuesday and today
was their best performance. The opposition put out
their strongest team, who were a year older than
our lads, but they coped very well and there’s a
fair few decent players in our squad.”

September 2007 - Saturday 22nd September proved to be a very interesting day
in Ladies soccer in Terryland Park as First Division League
winners Tribes took on Renmore in a very entertaining
Divisional Cup Final.
It took some time before both teams settled into the game
and pressure begain to apply from both sides. But it was
Renmore that were first on the score board just 5 minutes from
half time when a Tribes defender handled the ball in the
box. Renmores Una Keary stepped up to take the
spot kick blasting the ball straight into the path of the
keeeper who couldnt keep hold of the ball, Keary
closing in on the ball made no mistake by tapping it over the
line.
Ten minutes into the second half Tribes applied pressure
and were rewarded their first goal of the game when Sinead
Toomey took a long range shot that beat the Renmore
Keeper. It was a long hard battle fought well by both teams
that took this game to extra time.
Both sides came close to clinching a victory early in extra
time as they pushed hard for a winning goal. But it was
Tribes that finished the strongest with a minute to go of
extra time Regina Cunningham scored a superb goal from 18yrds
out. With Renmore still dazed by what had just happened
Tribes repeated their preformance with Cunningham scoring her
second of the game. Final whistle was blown as Tribes
celebrated the double this season.

| October 2007 - A fire that was
started at the back of the Community Centre in Renmore in the
early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday) will cost the local
soccer club over €5,000.
The fire, which was started by a number of youths drinking
in the area, caused extensive damage to Renmore Soccer Club's
temporary holding container, which held gear, nets, cones and
footballs.
It's understood the youths lit the fire to keep themselves
warm while drinking and it went out of control at around 1am
on Tuesday 30 October. The heat from the fire caused a lot of
the damage to the club's property.
The youths were interrupted by gardaí who arrived at the
scene.
Councillor Michael Crowe, who is Chairman of the Renmore
club, was at the scene early on Tuesday morning. He said this
is a major setback for the club and, without the garda
intervention, the damage could have been a lot worse.
"I have spoken before about the dangers of late night
drinking in fields such as here but it still continues. The
fire was started by a number of youths who were drinking here
and it seems that it got out of control. As a result the club
has suffered a loss in excess of €5,000.
"Time and again I have highlighted the amount of illegal
drinking going on in Galway, particularly the amount of
Buckfast and the dangers it presents.
"This club works hard for the area, provides a good service
and now on top of all other costs will have to suffer this
loss."
Cllr Crowe said the youths involved are being questioned by
gardaí and the club is investigating whether they can
compensate for the loss. He said measures must be put in place
to tackle bush drinking between community representatives and
gardaí.
"I have met with other members of the club to assess the
damage and see where we go from here. This was only a
temporary container, which is to be in place until next year
when hopefully the new club house will be built," said Cllr
Crowe.

- Renmore U14's Secure the League
Title!
Renmore
2 West Coast
1
Renmore traveled to
Tully Cross at the weekend needing a win to secure the
league title and end all hopes of nearest challengers
Oughterard
who meet Renmore in the final game of the season.
Played in perfect
conditions the game was fast flowing from end to end.
The only chance of the first half came to West Coast
with a ball played over the top to beat the off-side
trap only to see the final
effort narrowly
pass the post. With Renmore nerves settled few chances
were carved out by either side for the remainder of the
half.
The deadlock was
broken 10 minutes into the second half with a cross from
the left side which fell to the awaiting Finnan
Gallagher who calmly picked his spot. The sides were on
level terms after 25 minutes when Ian Batley finished
off a fine move down the middle to score in the bottom
corner. Renmore dominated and should have scored but for
some fine saves by Ian Staunton in the West coast goals.
The winner came with 5 minutes from time when Renmore
were awarded a penalty for hand ball.
Alan
Byrne calmly placed the ball low into the right corner
to secure full points and the league title.
The League table is

| May 2008 - Renmore U14s do the Double - League Champions ansd 1st Division Cup Winners On Thursday 22nd May in Terryland Park, Renmore U14's added the 1st Division Cup to the League Winners Title to complete the double. Renmore’s wait for the double ended on Thursday night, with a penalty shoot out victory over Corrib Celtic in Terryland Park. The winning penalty, blasted home by Finnan Gallagher, triggered scenes of unbridled joy from the fans and players of the Renmore club. Two top drawer stops from Renmore keeper Cillian Murphy in the shoot out and a number of other fine saves throughout the game ensured Renmore emerged as fully deserved victors. Renmore started the game at a frenetic pace and had the best of the opening exchanges, with two good chances coming in the first ten minutes. With nerves settled Corrib mounted a number of half chances but failed to overcome the very solid Renmore defense. With the sides level at the break Renmore broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half with Cillian Greaney heading home at the far post from an Alan Byrne corner. Chances came to both sides in an end to end game and Corrib were rewarded with a fine goal from Andrew Dillon with seven minutes remaining. With extra time looming both sides searched for the winner without success. Twenty minutes of extra time failed to break the deadlock and the resulting penalty shootout produced a trilling end to this epic battle. With Corrib’s first spot kick saved it went to the fourth round before Cillian Murphy again saved from the spot. With one kick away from the double Finnan Gallagher calmly picked his spot to secure the win. This ended a fine year for Renmore U14 securing both the league and cup double. | |

August 2008 - Renmore AFC held a Community or Open Day on the main soccer pitch in Renmore on Saturday 9th August from 12.00pm on. Despite the adverse weather conditions, we managed to get the tent and bouncy castle erected and all who attended had a great time. We had a series of 5-a-sides from 12pm til 2pm and ran some other events in between the showers. The bouncy castle proved a bigger hit with the juvenile teams than the small kids and managed to survive some serious bouncing sessions that included a penalty shoot out in the castle. The U15's have put in their request for a bouncy castle as a training aid and the manager is considering the idea. The schedule of activities was as follows: - 5-a-sides
- Tug of War (Johnny Farrell needs to practice this one for next year!)
- Sack Race
- Cross Bar Challenge
- Keep E up E
- Shoot the hoops
At 2.30, the skies came down on us and we decided to wrap up earlier than planned. Our apologies to anyone that turned up after 3.30pm and our thanks to all that turned up on the day, particularly those that helped out with the setup and the tidy up. The club committee would like to acknowledge and thank Molloys Centra Supermarket (Renmore), Coca Cola Ireland (Tuam) and Marios Restaurant (Merlin Park) for their kind sponsorship and support on the day. The drinks and lollies went down very well! Click here for some photos. | |

June 2009 - Renmore
U14s emerged victorious in a thrilling playoff to the
first division last weekend. The first goal was scored by
Cathal O Regan directly from a free kick outside the box and
the second by Evan Boyce who showed great composure after
being put through by Michael Hamilton. This was enough to
secure the title against a gallant Cregmore side.
Renmore led throughout the league but
faltered at the final hurdle which left them in a playoff. A
determined gritty performance saw them take the game to
Cregmore and persistent pressure led to the first goal after
20 mins. But they were forced to defend stoutly for the
remainder of the half with Daniel Lenihan and Stephen O Connor
particularly solid in central defense and David Heffernan
unbeatable in goal.
The second half saw renmore with a strong breeze
drive home their advantage and Cillian Greaney added great
width on the right wing. After several scares the second
Renmore goal sealed the encounter and the well deserved
victory led to great celebrations at the final whistle. The
season which had stretched on so long finally brought
silverware to a very deserving Renmore outfit, managed by
Terry O Regan and Martin Boyce. The team had been very
unfortunate to lose on penalties after extra time in the
Connaught Shield Final. |

May 2010 - Renmore U16s sweep to glory in Shield final. RENMORE’S U-16 Soccer team created history last weekend when they travelled to Strandhill in Sligo to capture the club’s first ever Connacht Shield title with a 6-2 victory over Leitrim side Manor Rangers. The opening 10 minutes were fast and frantic, but lacked clear cut goal chances as both sides showed signed of nerves. This changed in the 12th minute when Manor Rangers, with the aid of a strong breeze, carved their way through the Renmore defence. Paddy Woulfe was upended by Renmore captain Alan Byrne in the box and referee Thomas Oates immediately signalled to the penalty spot from which Woulfe duly converted. Both sides looked dangerous going forward but clear cut scoring opportunities were at a premium until Renmore's Eric Gannon delivered a fine flicked header in the direction of Kevin Connolly. Manor's Alan Curran attempted to intercept but Connolly reacted quicker and nudged the ball towards goal by the time Curran attempted his tackle. With Connolly through on goal, the foul from Curran left the referee with little option but to brandish a red card to the Manor Rangers centre back. To compound the misery for Manor Rangers, Kevin Connolly's superb free kick from the edge of the box found the top corner of the net. In the final minute of the opening half, Manor were thanking goalkeeper Clancy who made a magnificent save to deny Frank Flannery after good build-up play involving Cinan Molloy, Connolly and Gannon.
