Renmore 5-a-side Soccer Marathon

To help with the substantial cost of replacing equipment lost in the recent fire and to help with the annual running costs of the club, Renmore AFC ran a soccer marathon from 10-4.30pm in Renmore on Saturday, 24th November.

The format of the day involved a series of friendly 5-a-sides organised by age group and a general game where all ages played, from the U10's to the coaches and parents! The day started with the U11's playing, followed by the U13's. The U6, U8 and U9's played until 3pm when the U9's and U10's showed us what they could do.

Fortunately,  the weather held out and everyone had a great day.  The fundraising went very well and the club committee would like to thank everyone that donated to this worthy cause.

Special thanks are also due to all those who helped with refreshments and manned the marquee including Michelle and Yvonne. Thanks are also due to the Renmore Scouts for kindly lending the marquee and coffee/tea making facilities. The club would also like to thank Coke Ireland for their donation of soft drinks which went down very well!

Fire costs Renmore Soccer Club Thousands of Euro

A fire that was started at the back of the Community Centre in Renmore in the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday) will cost the local soccer club over €5,000.

The fire, which was started by a number of youths drinking in the area, caused extensive damage to Renmore Soccer Club's temporary holding container, which held gear, nets, cones and footballs.

It's understood the youths lit the fire to keep themselves warm while drinking and it went out of control at around 1am on Tuesday 30 October. The heat from the fire caused a lot of the damage to the club's property.

The youths were interrupted by gardaí who arrived at the scene.

Councillor Michael Crowe, who is Chairman of the Renmore club, was at the scene early on Tuesday morning. He said this is a major setback for the club and, without the garda intervention, the damage could have been a lot worse.

"I have spoken before about the dangers of late night drinking in fields such as here but it still continues. The fire was started by a number of youths who were drinking here and it seems that it got out of control. As a result the club has suffered a loss in excess of €5,000.

"Time and again I have highlighted the amount of illegal drinking going on in Galway, particularly the amount of Buckfast and the dangers it presents.

"This club works hard for the area, provides a good service and now on top of all other costs will have to suffer this loss."

Cllr Crowe said the youths involved are being questioned by gardaí and the club is investigating whether they can compensate for the loss. He said measures must be put in place to tackle bush drinking between community representatives and gardaí.

"I have met with other members of the club to assess the damage and see where we go from here. This was only a temporary container, which is to be in place until next year when hopefully the new club house will be built," said Cllr Crowe.

Ladies First Division Cup Final 2007

Saturday 22nd September proved to be a very interesting day in Ladies soccer in Terryland Park as First Division League winners Tribes took on Renmore in a very entertaining Divisional Cup Final.

It took some time before both teams settled into the game and pressure begain to apply from both sides.  But it was Renmore that were first on the score board just 5 minutes from half time when a Tribes defender handled the ball in the box.  Renmores Una Keary stepped up to take the spot kick blasting the ball straight into the path of the keeeper who couldnt keep hold of the ball, Keary closing in on the ball made no mistake by tapping it over the line.

Ten minutes into the second half Tribes applied pressure and were rewarded their first goal of the game when Sinead Toomey took a long range shot that beat the Renmore Keeper. It was a long hard battle fought well by both teams that took this game to extra time.

Both sides came close to clinching a victory early in extra time as they pushed hard for a winning goal.  But it was Tribes that finished the strongest with a minute to go of extra time Regina Cunningham scored a superb goal from 18yrds out.  With Renmore still dazed by what had just happened Tribes repeated their preformance with Cunningham scoring her second of the game.  Final whistle was blown as Tribes celebrated the double this season.

Tribes 3 - 1   Renmore    (aet)

Renmore AFC would like to congratulate the ladies on a great run and look forward to another great performance next season.
