Background to the Renmore AFC Dressing Rooms

Renmore AFC was founded in 1973. It is now a vibrant football club with over 200 members ranging from children of 6 years plus up to the senior squads.  Renmore AFC has contributed players to the Eircom League through Galway United and we are also able to provide players for the national side.

However,  we find ourselves in the unusual position of not having a club house to provide changing and shower facilities to our members. Our members do not have a facility to use in the wet and windy winter months.  They do not have somewhere to leave their belongings in a safe and dry environment.  Frankly. we feel this is unacceptable.

Throughout the last number of years, the Renmore AFC committee has been focused  on developing club house facilities for the players of Renmore.  We envisage this facility meeting the various requirements of our members and their families and the community of Renmore for generations to come. We have been engaged with Galway City Council for some time now toward agreeing a site for our new home.  We have also been engaged in fundraising activity to raise the required capital to initiate this work.

We have outlined some of the main requirements below to explain why this facility is so important.  We have also outlined some of the ways in which you can help us acheive this objective.

Weather and Dark Winter Evenings

All those who have spent a winter or two in Galway will know that we can face a pretty varied range of weather types from September to March. We also know that the two constants of weather always experienced are wind and rain. We are very unfortunate when snow and frost sets in! Combine this with the winter evenings where it is dark by 6pm and we are talking about a pretty hostile environment for training and playing.

Renmore AFC is focused and our members determined to get out there and play their game.  It is a testament to the dedication, at all levels, that our players show by turning up for training and games - week-in, week-out.

However,  anyone who has attended training and games will have seen players togging out in wind and rain, morning and evenings, and felt sorry that the teams don't have somewhere warm to prepare.  There's nothing worse than seeing a group of 7-years-olds, shivering and wet, and they have not even started training yet!

It is of huge concern to the club that our members are exposed to the elements all through the Autumn, Winter and Spring every year.  They have to tog out in bad wather, the clothes they need to change back into get wet and cold during training and they have to tog back in in the same weather. Not the most desirable conditions for a football club!

Shower and Changing Facilities

Outside of the requirement to get our members out of the bad weather,  we would also like to be able to offer a safer environment for our members to change.  Although our coaches are very vigilant and ensure all members are safe and accounted for, most parents and guardians would prefer not to have their kids changing on the side of the road where all and sundry can see them!

We feel it is essential that we have proper changing facilities to provide a safe and protected environment to tog in and out and somewhere safe for members to keep their belongings while they play and train. We also think our players should be able to take a warm shower directly after a game or training if they wish.

There is also the image of the club to thnk about.  Most of the bigger Galway clubs are able to provide changing facilities to their visitors.  Renmore should not be the only club in Galway unable to do this!

Meeting and Storage Facilities

The commitee and coaching staff face a constant struggle to look after the equipment belonging to the club.  All of those involved in training have now set aside a part of their garden sheds or garages for Renmore AFC. I am sure we'd all like to have full use of the shed or garage again!

It would be of huge benefit to the club to have one, central storage area for the club's gear. This would make it easier to account for our gear and reduce replacement costs.  It would also ease the process of making the club's gear available to all.  Currently,  coaches conduct a 'swap' where one team needs gear in ths possesion of another teams coach! Again,  not very desirable for one a club the size of Renmore.

There is the added benefit in that our members can use storage facilities and changing rooms to secure their belongings while they are training and playing.  Currently,  the are forced to leave their belongings on the side of the pitch which is neither secure enough or advisable.

The club commitee meets every two weeks to discuss the club business and plan for upcoming events. Currently,  we use the nearest hotel / pub facilities for this purpose.  A Club meeting facility would be of great benefit.  It would also enhance the prestige of the club as we could invite other clubs to meetings where required.

Of equal importance,  a meeting facility would be of use to club members for discussion of training plans, games strategy, team get-togethers, awards, celebrations etc.
